Sheltered Employment

Living independently is one of the most pressing challenges faced by young adults with Down syndrome and other disabilities as they graduate and transition from school into society. The Down Syndrome Foundation R.O.C. provides tailored employment support based on the abilities of individuals. For youth with disabilities who have a desire to work but face greater challenges, sheltered workshops are established to directly employ them as staff. Job coaches assist in addressing various workplace challenges, offering continuous support. When employees in the sheltered workshops develop the necessary skills to thrive in a general employment environment, they are supported in transitioning to mainstream workplaces.

"Abrazo" is a social enterprise brand created by the Down Syndrome Foundation R.O.C. to support sheltered workshops. The brand collaborates with local farmers, sells handmade cookies crafted by youth with disabilities, and partners with socially responsible businesses to produce co-branded products. Each workshop employs 6 to 9 individuals with disabilities. Tasks, including baking, folding boxes, labeling, packaging, and product sales, are fully completed by individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities. These roles are tailored to match each person’s physical condition and abilities through job analysis and redesign, ensuring a supportive and empowering work environment. The Foundation has created a “Lohas Workplace” environment to provide a supportive and inclusive space where individuals with special needs can gain stability in employment, build independent lives, and integrate into society with dignity.
